NCCL will begin by celebrating the Eucharist at the Cathedral of St. Raphael.
St. Raphael Parish has a long and rich history that reaches back to 1833 when the first missionaries came to this area. Father Samuel Mazzuchelli, a Dominican priest, came in 1835. He built and named the first Church, which was located on the property where St. Raphael School building now stands. Bishop Mathias Loras arrived in 1839. The church was then raised to the status of a Cathedral. In 1857, in response to the rapid growth of Dubuque, Bishop Loras made plans to build a much larger Cathedral Church. This is the present Cathedral as was dedicated on July 7, 1861.

The NCCL Convocation will begin with an invocation of the Holy Spirit. The membership of NCCL has reflected upon the changing dynamics and landscapes in our church. Throughout these reflections, which have taken place over many months, the Holy Spirit has been a guiding agent. Through prayer, dialogue, and reflection, the truth of the Spirit will guide participants into occasions of grace. As individuals and community, participants will (re)discover the guidance of God’s generous presence through an outpouring of wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. This day of invocation will invite participants to open themselves to prayer and call upon the Spirit to renew their charisms and call to leadership within the church.
Fr. Agustino Torres, Keynote Speaker.
Ernesto Vega, Capstone Speaker.
Katie Prejean McGrady, Emcee.
This is a day of active listening; a critical skill in leadership today. Active listening requires an intentional presence to that which is being articulated. For catechetical and evangelizing leaders of 2020, the historical narrative of the great commission will activate the deeply rooted memories of this ministry and its calling, utilizing both exegesis and ecclesiology. Participants will affirm our story and look forward towards new potentials in the future.
Carol Eipers, Keynote Speaker. Sponsored by Sadlier.
Mark Mogilka, Meitler Pastoral Planning Consultant.
Katherine Angulo, Spanish Capstone Speaker. Sponsored by Notre Dame McGrath Institute.
Sr. M. Johanna Paruch, English Capstone Speaker.
Joseph White, English Capstone Speaker. Sponsored by Our Sunday Visitor.
The community will be led in a thoughtful discernment process. With the anticipation of a new General Directory for Catechesis, NCCL is prepared to position itself in a system of meaningful change. Utilizing the Meitler consulting group, NCCL will continue the ongoing comprehensive discernment process with members, and explore the implications of adjusting systems, processes, and approaches in both the functioning of our national organization, and in the ministries of catechesis and evangelization.
Mike Patin, Keynote Speaker.
Dulce M. Jimenez Abreu, Spanish Capstone Speaker. Sponsored by Sadlier.
The last day is of application. Participants have invoked the Holy Spirit, listened to our communal story, and discerned the depth of the call to serve as leaders in the Church. Our time together will conclude by applying that to which we have been called. This day will challenge participants to go out and serve anew.
John Angotti, Keynote.
