The National Conference for Catechetical Leadership, in partnership with OSV, is proud to announce, Magnify! This 4-month event will explore the Directory for Catechesis and assist catechists in finding practical ways to apply the document in their ministry setting.

Magnify is a series of virtual events over a 4-month span that will introduce participants to the new Directory for Catechesis and explore each of the chapters in depth. Magnify begins with a 2-day virtual event September 18th and 19th. Magnify continues with 1-day virtual events in the months of October, November, and December. Each of these events will offer:

  • Keynotes from leading experts in the field.
  • Workshops that break open each section and chapter of the Directory for Catechesis and provide tools for practical application of those insights.
  • Resources that focus on different methodological approaches that can be applied to a variety of ministry settings (ie: parish or diocesan work, virtual or in-person gatherings).
  •  Opportunities for dialogue with presenters and other participants. This will include ways to gather in peer groups that align with your ministerial role or area of focus.

David Wells

Author, Speaker, Educator

David Wells

Author, Speaker, Educator
My teaching career began in 1985. At St John Houghton School in Ilkeston, I was promoted as Head of Upper School, often working with the 14-16 year-olds who felt most demotivated. These young people taught me how to teach. In 1990 I gained an M(Phil) degree from Nottingham University focusing on Effective Methods of Teacher In-service Training. The Master’s degree changed my direction. The following years I worked in London for the Catholic Education Service providing in-service training opportunities for staff in Catholic schools. This was followed by two Diocesan roles first as an Education Adviser in the Nottingham diocese and then in 2000, in Exeter as Director of Formation for the Plymouth Diocese. Since leaving Plymouth Diocese in May 2018, I’ve been grateful for a portfolio of projects including a two-year post working with Bishop John and the Salford Diocese. On the Road In 1997, I represented the Bishop’s Conference at a meeting in Jacksonville, Florida. This led to other invitations and since then I have spoken at more than 500 conferences worldwide. Please take a look at the endorsements page to read recent evaluations. What a privilege it is to meet and work with people from other countries. I have contributed to the production of training resources in the USA, Canada as well as here in the UK. I am a regular contributor to the Religious Education Congress in Anaheim, California where over 30,000 delegates gather to hear some of the world’s most prolific religious writers; and I have spoken at some of the largest teachers events in Canada and appeared on Canadian TV. Nearer to home I have enjoyed serving conferences in every diocese and corner of England and Wales and most of the dioceses in Scotland. As well as serving on several working parties for the Bishop’s Conference of England and Wales, I have also guest-lectured at three English Universities. Homework & Best Selling Author In 2000 I scripted and presented the video series “You, Your Children and Their Catholic Faith” which sold widely throughout the English speaking Church. It’s embarrassing now because the style is so dated, but the material still enjoys good reviews. My two books The Reluctant Disciple and The Grateful Disciple (Redemptorist Publications) have done well. The Reluctant Disciple was Redemptorist’s best-selling book of 2015. In 2019 I co-wrote a book of prayers entitled "At your side" published by Novalis. Alison and I married in 1989. That was my greatest ever decision. We have three grown-up children, Sam, Matt and Emily who each have a different way of making us laugh. Now in their 20’s, they give me hope. We also have a spoilt dog which does exactly what it likes, eats plastic and doesn’t give me any hope. In my free time, I enjoy spending time on the River Exe dodging the river ferries.

Catechists, Speaker, Teacher
Caroline FAREY, BA(Hons), MPhil(Cantab), MA, STB, PhL, STL, PhD(Lateran) Dr Caroline Farey was one of 10 people appointed in 2017 to the working party for the new Directory for Catechesis 2020. She had been responsible for catechesis at the Maryvale Institute under Dr Petroc Willey from Sept 1996 to October 2013. There an ‘Annunciation pedagogy’ was developed out of an in-depth study and application of the General Directory for Catechesis (1997) and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. She trained catechists and deacons in this ‘Annunciation pedagogy’ forming a great catechetical team who put it into practise and together enabled it to be refined and developed over 20 years across the English speaking world, including the United States, United Arab Emirates, Australia, Malta, Ireland and the UK. Learning through Art and Beauty has always been a key element of her style and her catechetical use of many works of Sacred Art can be found at https://review.catechetics.com She also worked at St Mary’s Seminary, Oscott, 2001-2011, teaching Thomism, especially his Anthropology, Epistemology and Metaphysics. It was during this time that she completed her STL at Leuven, PhL at Maynooth and Pontifical Doctorate at the Lateran, Rome. In Autumn 2012 her work was recognised when she was appointed as one of 10 women (3 lay women) experts at the Synod on the New Evangelisation for the transmission of the Faith. On 11th October 2012, the 50th anniversary of the opening of the 2nd Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of the promulgation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, she received the ‘Message for Catechists’ from Pope Benedict XVI. After working in Evangelisation and Catechesis for several UK dioceses Caroline is now freelance. Her website is her latest development, enabling the Annunciation pedagogy and its beautiful Marian and grace-filled vibrancy to reach many more priests, parents and catechists in the English speaking world: https://www.theannunciation.org.uk From this website she runs an on-line catechist formation course with her colleague, Mrs Carol Anne Harnett. On this course, every Unit begins with a work of Art explained catechetically.
