Garden Grove, CA, 5/22/19 – Dr. Michael J. Martocchio, Director of the Office of Catechesis and Christian Initiation of the Diocese of Charleston was awarded the Diocesan/Multi-Diocesan New Wineskins Award. The award (1) highlights and celebrates extraordinary achievement occurring in a diocese (or diocesan clusters) in the ministries of evangelization and catechesis; (2) shares successful initiatives that may benefit other dioceses; (3) encourages continued creative innovation in parish catechetical and evangelization efforts; and (4) reflects the spirit of the “new evangelization” promulgated by Saint Pope John Paul II and the General/National Directories for Catechesis.
Dr. Martocchio was presented the award for his Faith Formation Webinar Series. In order to make catechist certification available to all of the catechists of the diocese, the Diocese of Charleston offers a Faith Formation Webinar series. These monthly webinars cover a variety of topics ranging from Scriptural and theological considerations to pastoral and methodological ones. This program allows the central diocesan office to maximize its ability to connect with those in catechetical ministry throughout a geographically large expanse. It is aimed at giving catechists and catechetical leaders a ‘bite-sized’ (1 or 1.5 hr segments) treatment of essential topics and various topics of interest. The program consists of monthly live webinars and archived webinar modules. With the ability to archive, both time and space cease to be an obstacle in the pursuit of catechist certification. The single most important resource in the ministry of catechesis is the well-formed catechist. With this in mind, this initiative has aimed at providing formation that is customized to the needs of the catechists in the Diocese of Charleston in order to equip them to respond to their call to serve the Gospel.
