Dear Diocesan Directors of Religious Education,

How we form the present generation will impact the Church for a lifetime. The faith formation of all who work with children and young people in parishes and schools is critical to the formation of future generations of Catholic adults and families.

The Committee on Catholic Education at the USCCB has developed a Faith Formation Working Group. Bishop Peter Christensen is chairing the working group and is assisted by Bishop Andrew Cozzens and Bishop David Ricken representing the Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis. In addition to the three bishops, Dr. Barbara Edmondson from the Archdiocese of Baltimore, Dr. Tom Bumford from the Archdiocese of Washington DC and Interim President of NCEA and Mr. Mike Scherschligt, Executive Director of Holy Family School of Faith Association also serve as consultants to the Working Group.

The purpose of the working group is to gather data and information about present diocesan faith formation programs for teachers and catechists with the possibility of making recommendations for guidelines and resources to the bishops on the Committee for Catholic Education and Evangelization and Catechesis.

As a first step to this important discussion, the Secretariat for Catholic Education and the Secretariat for Evangelization and Catechesis are conducting a simple survey among superintendents of schools and diocesan religious education directors. The survey is tailored to gather basic information about present faith formation programs at the diocesan level.

I ask you to take 7-10 minutes to complete the survey – http://goo.gl/forms/SibHzBhkQ – It is a necessary first step to a national discussion about faith formation of leaders, catechists, and teachers in parish religious education programs and Catholic schools. We would ask you to complete the survey no later than May 20, 2016.

Thank you for your assistance in gathering data through the survey. We look forward to sharing the information with you in the very near future.

In Christ,

PETER MURPHY
